EMDR History

Nearly 20 years ago, the news show 20/20 ran a piece on a “radical new psychotherapy” known as EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. EMDR is no longer new, nor radical, as a plethora of clinical research has shown.

This video gives examples of people who had undergone terrible traumas that had proven unresponsive to conventional therapy. The results after EMDR therapy were remarkable. The results provoked intense skepticism, and many conventional mental health researchers scoffed at the claims.

Today, EMDR is one of two treatment methods recognized by the VA as being effective for PTSD. But even more exciting is the expanded number of issues — perhaps not as intense as war or rape — that can be effectively treated with EMDR. There is ample evidence that EMDR is a valid, effective form of treatment for many conditions.
